Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
