French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
