Colombia's President Says 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump and Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, further raising strains in their relations after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates drug factories and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Escalating Threats coupled with Claims

Talking to reporters over the weekend, Trump suggested similar use of force against Colombia, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and “run by a sick man who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the trade.

A Strained Partnership

The country has long been a key ally of the United States in the campaign against narcotics trade and received cross-party backing in Washington, however, the relationship have deteriorated significantly after Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Answer

Upon being questioned whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"He comments without information. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become numerous insurgents in the mountains. And should they arrest me, whom many of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth participating with the radical M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he took part in writing a new constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from all sides of the ideological divide have rejected the threats of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Economic Strains

The US revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged US troops to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the region and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted operations on boats off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
