Based on information from Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has indicated that the true toll is almost certainly substantially higher, due to hundreds of missing people from Gaza.

Civilian Deaths

High-Profile Cases

Some deaths in custody have been widely reported, for instance a 50-year-old healthcare leader who died in detention after four months in confinement.

A detainee held with the victim testified that he was brought to the exercise area by correctional officers shortly before his death, obviously hurt and exposed from the lower body. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in Israeli custody are unidentified. Correctional authorities and military supplied researchers with the total of casualties in confinement, and minimal other details including the location where they died, but not the prisoners’ names.
