Administration Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.
A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but not the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
